Merricks, Victoria
Bunurong Country
An addition to an original 1960’s Alistair Knox home on the Mornington Peninsula, Apple House is home to creative owners - a landscape architect and collector. Conceived as a separate structure forming a walled garden, the resulting height of the tall gabled form responds to the existing roof lines and adjacent towering eucalypts. Behind the timber batten façade lies a study-library, bunkroom, and guest suite within a compact footprint. A richly layered series of experiential spaces connect with the landscape through carefully curated openings to the environment beyond. From an adaptation of the existing material palette, timber batten cladding creates an intricate light play across the exterior. Exposed timber, brick floors, and hessian linings add texture, grounding the home into its rural context. Materiality and detailing celebrate craftsmanship and an elemental simplicity in a refined playful country retreat for extended family.
