About

Draper Noxon is a Melbourne-based architectural practice shaped by the convergence of two award-winning studios: Sally Draper Architects and Noxon Architecture. With a shared ethos of enduring design integrity, environmental responsibility, and an innate understanding of spatial experience, Draper Noxon brings together a legacy of finely resolved work in rural and urban settings across residential, education, public, and heritage sectors. At Draper Noxon, we believe people are at the heart of great architecture. We are passionate about crafting enriching environments that foster deep connection and enhance the human experience.

Architecture at Draper Noxon is conceived as a layered and iterative process - one that values dialogue, observation, and an acute interpretation of context. Each project is approached as an open exchange, where client narratives, site histories, and material expression inform a built outcome that is both highly considered and enduring. Spaces emerge through a process of distillation, ensuring that each design response is deeply sensitive to the needs and aspirations of individual occupants.

Central to the practice is a sensitivity to place and connection - how a building sits within its broader setting and engages with the nuances of light, materiality, and atmosphere. An understanding of history is embedded within each intervention, honouring existing conditions while shaping spaces that feel inherently contemporary. The relationship between architecture and landscape is fundamental, as is a commitment to imbedding an understanding of Indigenous traditions of Country and place into our practice and work. Our projects not only respond to their immediate surroundings but also contribute meaningfully to the wider built and natural environments they sit within.

As a fundamental driver of the design process, sustainability underpins each design response within the studio. Considered from inception, passive environmental strategies - solar orientation, wind patterns, and sheltering elements - are carefully calibrated to enhance comfort and efficiency. Material selection is deliberate, favouring an honest and tactile expression that speaks to longevity, authenticity, and quality.

Draper Noxon is dedicated to crafting architecture that is both highly resolved and deeply resonant. A practice of work that is about more than built form; it is about fostering connection - to place, to landscape, and to the custodians who experience the spaces daily. The result is a crafted body of work that is timeless, richly responsive, and quietly transformative.

Sally Draper

Director and Co-founder

Sally Draper is an architect whose work is defined by clarity, restraint, and a profound understanding of place. With a career built on thoughtful and highly resolved architecture, she established Sally Draper Architects over a decade ago, shaping a practice recognised for its precision and quiet elegance. Her approach draws on experience as a director of Swaney Draper, together with many years working in the UK with Richard Rogers and Grimshaw, which she brings forward into the partnership with Draper Noxon.

At the core of her practice is a considered interrogation of site, brief, and context. A commitment to environmental sustainability, material integrity, and an avoidance of trends underpin her work, resulting in buildings that feel deliberate, calm, and enduring. As a Co-Founding Director, Sally is pivotal across every phase of a project - from briefing and strategic analysis to delivery and client management, ensuring a cohesive and sustainable practice-led approach.

Sally’s portfolio is diverse, spanning institutional, educational, and residential projects, continually integrating a multi-disciplinary sensibility and resolve across each. She has developed a particular expertise in designing for learning environments, bringing a depth of knowledge to institutional projects and how these core buildings support diverse learning needs through flexibility and adaptable methodologies. Her residential work reflects an interest in how people inhabit space, with rural and coastal projects offering a studied interplay between light, landscape, and material.

With many of her projects having been widely awarded and published, she has a commitment to excellence in both design and execution. Beyond practice, Sally continual contribution to the profession through teaching and architectural jury roles, reinforces her position as a leader within the Australian architecture community.

Justin Noxon

Director and Co-founder
BPD
BArch (Hons)
AIA

As an architect who contributes both in practice and to the wider profession, Justin Noxon’s approach is grounded in authenticity, place, and a deep connection to the natural elements. He believes architecture is as much about people and connection – where sensory experience and emotional resonance take precedence. His involvement across all phases of each project – from concept, analysis and delivery - ensures his process is deliberately intuitive and layered. Shaped by an empathy-driven exploration of site and understanding the human condition, his considered and rich body of published and awarded work includes receiving the AIA 2022 Victorian Architecture Medal for The Grampians Peaks Trail.

Having worked across both small and large practices in Australia and Europe, Justin has engaged with diverse processes, project scales, and client relationships, which he brings into his role as Co-Founding Director. His experience is expansive, yet his approach remains refined, supported through observation and listening, and an understanding of place. His time with Australia’s traditional landowners embedded a sensitivity to the link between architecture and landscape, fostering a design language that is responsive, raw, and deeply attuned to the elemental.

Justin’s focus lies in creating spaces that are honest in materiality and restrained in form, allowing for an architecture that is immersive, rather than imposed. Inspired by the clarity and precision of Swiss and Japanese approaches, alongside an understanding and appropriateness of place shaped by the Australian context, his work embraces an ‘enough-ness’ - where light, texture, and proportion shape the experience of space. His immersion within the Australian architecture industry extends beyond his time in practice, to his roles in teaching and on architectural juries, retaining a connection to peers and the coming generations.

With over 25 years in practice, Justin’s career began at the University of Melbourne, followed by formative years in London as an Associate at Foster + Partners and Angel Fernandez Alba, in Madrid. His return to Australia in 2004 led to the establishment of Noxon Giffen in Sydney, before founding NOXON Architecture in Melbourne in 2015, and now to his partnership with Sally, in the formation of Draper Noxon.

His work remains driven by the pursuit of architecture that is both intentional and sensitive - where a considered simplicity fosters connection, emphasises beauty, and embodies a quiet sense of belonging.
