Barwon Heads House 1

2008

Barwon Heads, Victoria
Wadawurrung Country

Situated in a prominent position adjacent to the Barwon Heads Golf Course on Victoria’s Bellarine Peninsula, this house is conceived as a series of distinct gabled pavilions which read individually and facilitate multi-generational living. The clustered arrangement forms a protected private courtyard, offering both shelter and connection to the surrounding landscape, directing views towards the windswept surf coast beyond.

Constructed in weathered timber and rammed earth, the material palette is a direct response to the coastal setting, with the natural textures reflecting the rugged beauty and materiality of the nearby landscape. The design complements and frames the environment, creating intimate, serene spaces while allowing the house to maintain an open, airy connection to its coastal surroundings.

This house strikes a balance between privacy and openness, offering both an enveloping peaceful and private retreat, while maintaining an expansive visual connection to the unique coastal context and the wild southern ocean beyond.
