Christ Church Grammar School

2019

Melbourne, Victoria
Wurundjeri Country

Responding to the heritage bluestone of Christ Church and its distinctive and prominent spire structure, Christ Church Grammar School sits discreetly tucked away from view on the fringe of Fawkner Park. In a process drawing on the layering of time and a future-focused purpose, the new CCGS building aims to accommodate a substantial program of rich and integrated spaces that encourage the fostering of new connections.

As a creative and efficient method of utilising spatial complexities within a dense inner-urban educational setting, CCGS is also an exploration of opportunity. Developing a creative and layered learning environment through a strategy utilising below ground areas, various spaces are opened to new sunken courtyards and north-facing voids. While unexpected and unconventional, the approach allows for the creation of light-filled and naturally ventilated learning spaces that become their own vibrant new destinations.

Through a sensitive engagement with the existing historic and religious context established within the school, the original character is referenced and reinterpreted through a contemporary lens. The response combines an evolution of the typical learning environment with one that also respects the past, all while celebrating a contemporary relevancy. New architectural interventions are quietly integrated throughout, enriching the learning environment through thoughtful innovation and connection.
