Flinders House
2019
Flinders, Victoria
Bunurong Country
Flinders House is discreetly situated within the rural hinterland of the Flinders coast and is an idyllic and elemental house that presents as a collection of understated gabled forms. As a subtle nod to the former dairy that previously occupied the site, the design approach and dark exterior nestle the house into the site amongst the indigenous vegetation and reference the weathered charm of traditional creosote-stained farm structures. The experience inside sees a more refined palette of natural white bagged brick, wood-washed timber, burnished concrete, and stone. The home is a sanctuary, retaining a modesty and intimacy. Able to expand and contract as needed, the design footprint can accommodate family and friends seasonally, yet remains a structure that speaks sensitively to the past and place.
