Judge Box House
2023
Metung, Victoria
Gunaikurnai Country
Located on an elevated promontory between Box’s Creek and Lake King, Judge Box House evokes the memory of the original 1872 house as an assemblage of component parts. Although, significantly altered and added to over the past 150 years, the original collection of white weatherboard pavilions has been restored and adapted through the addition of contemporary new wings referencing the language of the local weathered timber Orbost barns. Clustered around a central treed courtyard, the component parts offer the artist and urban designer owners the opportunity to enjoy the many different views through the trees across the water. The “cookhouse”, opens directly to the kitchen garden, the studio is a more focussed, contemplative space and the library a secluded book lined retreat. The house enshrines the life of its owners and is deeply embedded in the history and context of this special site.
