Kiln House 1
2005
Porepunkah, Victoria
Taungurung, Gunaikurnai, Waywurru, and Jaithmathang Country
Set within the Ovens Valley, two existing tobacco kilns are reimagined to provide boutique accommodation, while also preserving the heritage of the site. Through the integration of a linear addition, the old and new are subtly connected, allowing the original structures to remain. A sequence of indoor and outdoor spaces frame the dramatic valley and mountain vistas in the distance. A richly layered and restrained material palette and crafted detailing, creates a sense of clarity between the new and the older textured fabric of the historic kilns. Balancing both the past and the unique natural beauty of the site, the proposal creates an enduring and immersive experience.
