Roses Gap Eco-Lodge
2023
The Grampians, Victoria
Jardwadjali and Djab Wurrung Country
Set within the dramatic landscape of the Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park, Roses Gap Eco Lodge is proposed as an off-grid retreat for hikers, designed to sit gently within its rugged bushland setting. The linear plan stretches along the contours of a long narrow site, offering expansive views while drawing northern sun into communal areas and morning light into bedrooms.
Comprised of seven-bedrooms, the lodge integrates a breezeway and communal living spaces and embraces low-impact living. Powered by solar PV with battery storage, together with site-collected and recycled water, the project employs passive design principles for heating and cooling along with a driving principle to exist lightly within the landscape.
In a region prone to extreme bushfire conditions, the lodge needed to be constructed from natural and robust fire-resilient materials. Mild steel cladding and perforated mesh screens offer durability and fine-grain texture, while warm timber lining envelopes the interior and references the area's traditional rural forms. The architecture follows a restrained and rhythmic structure, balancing resilience and economy with an intentionally inviting sense of retreat and connection.
Currently in the concept design phase, the project is being developed with future government funding in mind – proposed as a place of rest and reflection that is deeply connected to both the surrounding landscape and climate, while also celebrating the shared experience of hiking and an immersion within nature.
