The Strathcona Early Years Centre marks the first significant step in transforming the school’s campuses, emerging from a comprehensive masterplan developed in 2019. This innovative project breathes new life into three Edwardian houses, repurposing them into a rich and stimulating environment tailored for young learners. Situated within a sensitive residential context, the Centre has been warmly embraced by the local community, creating a seamless connection between built form and surroundings.

The Centre comprises three heritage houses, linked by two contemporary additions. This juxtaposition fosters a healthy tension, blending the charm and history of the original structures with fresh, dynamic, new education spaces. The design explores how domestic spaces can be adapted into an interconnected network of learning areas, offering a unique atmosphere supporting different learning experiences. From intimate nooks to expansive open areas, the centre allows children to find environments suited to collaboration, independent learning, or creative exploration. By retaining key existing elements, the design celebrates the buildings’ heritage, cultivating a familiar, "home-away-from-home" atmosphere. This sense of warmth ensures a calm, reassuring environment for children to begin their educational journey and a safe space where curiosity can flourish.

Integral to the design are an atelier, piazza, community gathering space, and expansive outdoor learning areas. These spaces foster a culture of curiosity and care, encouraging interaction between students, staff, and families, and building community across the school.
