Warnambool Law Courts
Warrnambool, Victoria
Peek Whurrong and Kirrae Wurrung Country
2004
The Warrnambool Law Courts is an important civic addition to its coastal community, providing facilities for Magistrates, County, and Supreme Courts, along with associated Department of Justice functions. The architecture achieves a nuanced equilibrium, balancing the authority of the law with an approachable civic environment that ultimately serves the community.
Extensive external sun shading is carefully articulated on the northern and western facades for optimised thermal comfort and heat gain mitigation, while clear views from all public areas ensure the interior remains connected with the surrounding context as a key part of the experience.
The material palette focusses on soft and muted elements as a respectful response to the sandstone of the adjacent historic Christchurch buildings. Providing continuity between old and new, steel details aim to provide a point of departure between the two eras, while also signalling how they are integrated. The project demonstrates acknowledgement of the Law Courts as an important civic function and their context within a regional townscape.
